Fun Things to Do When It Rains in Paradise
Rainy Days in Coron
Rain in paradise? Don’t worry! While a downpour might change your island-hopping plans for the day, it definitely doesn’t have to ruin your holiday. Unlike other parts of the Philippines, the rainy season in Northern Palawan usually brings short, mild storms. Catastrophic flooding is very rare here, so you can still easily get around town. Having lived and traveled in Coron through all seasons, we’ve personally tested and verified the best ways to spend a stormy day. Here are our 9 favorite things to do when it rains in Coron!
1. Hit the Gym & Stay Active
If you like to keep moving even when it’s wet outside, Coron Town has a few great fitness options depending on your style:
Flexing Spartans Fitness Center: A real old-school weightlifting gym. You can pump iron, lift heavy, or work out with a private coach. Pro tip: Bring your own water bottle and sweat towel. There is no air conditioning, and the drink fridge empties quickly on busy days!
CORE-ON Fitness: Located in downtown Coron, this newer facility offers modern equipment, air conditioning, and great overall training conditions.
Tribe Calamian: A local Muay Thai gym offering boxing and combat classes for adults and kids (minimum age is 13 years old). It’s a fantastic way to break a sweat on a cool afternoon.
2. Enjoy a Slow Brunch or Early Drink
If exercising isn’t your vibe, do the exact opposite and slow down. Coron Town has a fantastic selection of cozy cafes, local eateries, and chill bars.
Grab a window seat, order fresh local coffee, and enjoy an extended brunch.
Take your time over a long lunch, read a book, and transition into an early evening cocktail while listening to the rain outside.
Bonus: Keep an eye out for seasonal menu discounts and rainy-season happy hour deals between June and October!
3. Expand Your Diving & Shipwreck Knowledge
Can’t dive in the ocean today? Take the time to learn more about what lies beneath the surface! Rainy days are ideal for leveling up your diving skills and knowledge:
Complete your Nitrox theory: Finish the classroom portion so you are ready to dive when the skies clear.
Study WWII history: Learn about the fascinating history behind Coron’s famous Japanese shipwreck fleet.
Connect with underwater photographers: Share camera setup tips and editing tricks with fellow divers.
Need a connection? Send us a message, and we’ll happily introduce you to trusted local dive shops and experts!
4. Master Dry Breathing & Freediving Techniques
If you love freediving or yoga, you can use a rainy day to improve your breath-hold and lung capacity without getting in the water.
In a joint project by Coron-Freediving and Yoga sa Isla, local instructor Allen teaches dry breathing techniques that help build mental calm and underwater confidence.
How to join: Send an email to info.freedivingcoron@gmail.com to check class schedules.
5. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day
There is nothing quite like listening to the gentle rhythm of tropical rain while getting a relaxing massage. Taking a few hours for a wellness treatment is one of our absolute favorite rainy-day activities in town.
Coron offers everything from simple local hilot massages to full-service day spas. You can easily book a Swedish massage, reflexology session, or body scrub at one of the main spots along Real Street and National Highway.
6. Find Your Balance with a Yoga Session
If you want to stretch, decompress, and find mental clarity, head over to Yoga sa Isla.
This beautiful wellness space is located right in Coron Town, yet it feels like a quiet, hidden retreat away from the busy streets. Stretching and breathing with the soothing sound of rain in the background is a wonderful experience. They offer various daily classes suitable for all experience levels.
7. Taste Local Craft Beer at Brewhouse Coron
Brighten up a gray, overcast afternoon with a local craft beer tasting!
Head over to Brewhouse Coron on Real Street. They brew their own craft beers right on site, featuring 6 distinct varieties ranging from crisp ales to rich stouts.
Happy Hour: Daily from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
8. Try Indoor Roller Skating
Traveling with kids, or just looking for something unique and fun? Coron has a warm and welcoming local skate community that offers indoor roller skating lessons for both children and adults.
It is a great space to burn off energy, practice new tricks, and meet local skaters completely out of the rain.
Get in touch: Search for Coron Skater Club on Facebook or Instagram to see their open indoor sessions and locations.
9. Learn Basic Tagalog Phrases
It is always fun and polite to speak a bit of the local language while traveling in the Philippines!
On rainy days, we help organize small, donation-based language crash courses for travelers. Grab a notebook and pen, sit down with a friendly local teacher, and spend two hours learning useful everyday Tagalog words and phrases.
