one of the best things to do :
Freediving in Coron
Coron is the ultimate destination to learn, practice, and advance your freediving skills. Here, you’ll not only connect more deeply with nature but also discover new aspects of yourself, unlocking entirely new underwater worlds. Whether you’re a beginner taking your first breath-hold steps or an advanced freediver refining your technique, Coron offers the perfect environment.
While the region is globally acclaimed for its World War II shipwrecks, a hidden gem truly shines for apnea enthusiasts: Barracuda Lake. Nestled amidst towering limestone karsts on Coron Island, Barracuda Lake is more than just a picturesque spot—it’s a unique geological wonder that provides freedivers with an extraordinary environment. Unlike typical ocean dives, Barracuda Lake is an enclosed body of water, meaning it’s free from strong currents and choppy surface conditions. This creates an almost pool-like serenity for focused breath-hold diving.
Unparalleled Visibility
The defining characteristic of Barracuda Lake is its remarkable water clarity. With visibility often exceeding 30 meters, freedivers can descend into an ethereal blue world, observing dramatic underwater rock formations and ancient stalagmites with breathtaking clarity. This also makes the lake a popular spot for underwater photos and videos.
The Enigmatic Thermocline and Halocline
As you descend, you’ll pass through distinct water layers. The upper layer is cool freshwater, but at approximately 14 to 15 meters, the water temperature suddenly rises to a surprisingly warm 38-39°C. This is where freshwater meets heated saltwater, creating a visible, shimmering boundary—often described as “oily” or “blurry”—that feels like stepping into a natural hot tub.
